Love is constantly on our minds and hearts, and it absolutely should be. There is no greater subject in our world than love.
The word “love” is constantly spoken and heard among us – in our conversations, song lyrics, movies, and television shows. “All you need is love,” “Love is a many splendored thing,” to the oft-quoted, “Love is love” which seems to have become the last word on the subject for our modern understanding.
But should it be?
Because it’s fair to say, that we are failing at love.
Instead, division and violence seem to rule the day.
And this isn’t just a condition of our modern-day culture here in America, but has been a reality throughout history; as our human story is littered with hate, contempt, and cruelty throughout all continents, societies, and peoples.
Even though at times we may get the impression that the world is getting more compassionate, the statistics don’t lie.

And it doesn’t stop at the breakdown of romantic relationships.

And, according to the Council on Aging, “Approximately one and ten Americans aged 60+ have experienced some form of elder abuse. So what gives? Why are we doing so poorly at loving each other?
There are many aspects regarding our failing at love, but the one question that we are neglecting to ask is perhaps the most important:
What does the Author of love- the One who created us in love to love, tell us about it?
In other words, what does God say that love is?
This question is crucial since Holy Scripture tells us that God created all things. Furthermore, it says not that “love is love,” but that God is love. In John’s first letter:
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.
1 John 4:7-9
If God is love, why not turn to Him and ask what love is? And why not listen to what He is telling us?
Because love is not simply a passionate feeling, but an eternal reality- God’s reality. Someday, there will be nothing left but God and love, and those who wish to participate in His love.
The question we all have to ask ourselves is, will I participate in real love? Or am I satisfied with the watered-down and adulterated substitute that the world offers?
There is a prayer that is attributed to St. Francis that begins:
Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
We, as Christians, are supposed to share God’s love with the world, but we can’t share what we don’t have. St. Francis, as a faithful follower of Christ, knew what love could be.
Will we listen to what God is instructing us? Will we follow?
To that end, here are all the scriptural references to love in the New Testament. Through them, we see something emerging- a definition of love lived out in thought, word, and deed through the perfect love of Jesus Christ; and a coming reality where true Love is, was, and always will be.
Because one thing that we can all agree on- the world is in desperate need of love. It is the deepest desire of our hearts- to love and be loved. It is the thing that God created us to do.
God wants to teach every one of us to love. Are we ready to learn?
Love in the New Testament:
- “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ Matthew 5:43
- But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you- Matthew 5:44
- For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?- Matthew 5:46
